Police warn against rail vandalism
Police searching for those responsible for throwing a shopping trolley into the path of an oncoming train have called the incident a "mindless act of vandalism".
The Worksop to Nottingham service was disrupted on February 1, when a trolley was put onto the railway line in Mansfield.
Officers from the British Transport Police believe the incident occurred in the half-hour leading up to 10:10pm that evening.
Pc Richard Bailey said: "Although this may seem like fun to those who continue to play, what they don't realise are the dangerous implications of this.
"Behaviour like this is incredibly risky and can result in dire consequences. The railway is an extremely dangerous environment that should never be considered as somewhere to hang out."
Officers are visiting homes in the local area in a bid to garner information about what happened as well as talking to residents about the dangers of railway lines.
The train collided with the trolley close to the footbridge next to Princes Street, Mansfield, and although it was not badly damaged, delays were caused.
Pc Bailey added: "This mindless act of vandalism could have been a lot worse."
