Two towns in Kent have been named among the best places to live in Britain. Sevenoaks and Deal were both on the list compiled by The Sunday Times, which assessed a number of factors to rank the country’s top residential locations.
From jobs, schools and broadband speed to culture, community spirit, local shops and on-the-ground experience, Kent proved to be a great place to live. Some 15 places in the south-east were found on the comprehensive list.
Tim Palmer, one of the Best Place to Live judges, spoke about the inclusion of Sevenoaks in the results. He told Kent Live: "There aren't many proper towns with their own character and identity that you can get to within 25 minutes of London.
“There’s the new girls’ grammar school annexe which opened very recently. It came about as a result of a local campaign and that shows Sevenoaks has a real community spirit. There’s also lots of lovely countryside. Knole Park is the one that stands out to me, but there’s lots of other green spaces you can get to very easily as well."
A settlement has been recorded on the site at Sevenoaks since the 13th century and the construction of Knole House helped to expand it into a village in the 15th century. Over the years, it has grown even more and is now a popular commuter town.
Speaking about Deal, Mr Palmer said: “I really like Deal. Compared with Margate, which is either super-trendy or a bit rough around the edges in parts, Deal has a proper independent character all of its own.
“It’s a Goldilocks location that's got lots of great independent shops and beautiful houses, especially in the Middle Street Conservation Area. It also has an amazing view of the sea-front from the pier and really good modern restaurants.”
The former fishing, mining and garrison town of Deal boasts a pleasant location on the English Channel. Deal Castle and Walmer Castle make for interesting local attractions, while the well-preserved Georgian townhouses give the town a grand feel.
Kent is a popular place to live, as it represents a short commute to London. Workers can enjoy the relative countryside and raise a family in beautiful surroundings, while still holding down a job in London. Kings Ferry offers commuter services in Kent that will help to take the stress out of the daily trip into and out of the office.
