Travelling to work via the London Underground can lead to an unpredictable journey and potential delays. This morning (August 30th), commuters on the Northern Line faced disruption due to a signal failure during rush hour.
Both branches of the Northern Line – Bank and Charing Cross – were affected, leaving passengers with no choice but to find an alternative route to work. It’s likely that many were late getting into the office, as well as flustered from the experience.
The Northern Line’s Twitter account updated travellers, stating: "We currently have severe delays between Kennington and Camden Town via both branches and minor delays on the rest of the line. Please use alternative routes where possible."
It was the Charing Cross branch that was the first to be up and running once again, followed by the Bank branch, which was resolved by 8.35am. Despite this, minor delays remained on the line for some time and platforms were busy due to a backlog of passengers.
Instances such as this one are common on the Tube and some commuters may decide it’s time to swap their daily journey to travel by coach. Signal failure does not disrupt Kings Ferry services into London and there are excellent opportunities to turn rail passes into season tickets for the coach.
Greg Flucker, a regular commuter on the Northern Line, told the Evening Standard: "For as long as I've been making the commute, I've felt the number of people using the service far exceeds the capacity the line was designed to handle - which is understandable due to its age."
The Northern Line opened in 1890 and runs for 36 miles, stopping at 50 stations. This gives it the potential to cause problems for many people when there are issues with the infrastructure. Commuting into London can be a stressful business, but it doesn’t have to be with a guaranteed seat and air conditioning aboard a coach.
