A guide to music in London: Part One

Among the many things that mark London out as one of the must-visit cities of the world is its incredible history of live entertainment. Regardless of whether you’re a fan of stand-up comedy, top sporting action or just about anything else in between, you’re sure to find something to tickle your fancy almost every night of the week.

Indeed, there are always loads of great events being staged in the city, ranging from huge shows that pack massive arenas like Wembley Stadium or the O2 Arena to something much more intimate at a pub or small establishment. In this sense, tourists and locals really are spoiled for choice.

Of course, the number of great shows being held in London tends to increase over the summer months, when the glorious sunshine means that events can be staged outdoors and, let’s face it, we all tend to be more in the spirit for a party.

Here, we’re going to provide a guide to some of the top music events and shows scheduled for this summer in London. Given the eclectic range of sounds on offer, it seems difficult to imagine that there won’t be at least one event that takes your fancy.

Wireless Festival

This has become one of the top music events in the UK and this year’s show is to be staged in Finsbury Park in north London.

While there is no guarantee that the weather will play ball, those who attend the show are sure to have an amazing time, given the great range of acts who have already been confirmed. Among the best of these is Kanye West.

The MC is not only one of the biggest names in hip-hop, but is also among the most outspoken. He has also garnered attention in recent times for his relationship with reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who recently gave birth to her first child.

Added to this, fellow hip-hop royalty Pharrell Williams, who is currently riding the waves of success emanating from his most-recent single, entitled Happy. Outkast, Drake and Drake, among others, will also be appearing at Finsbury Park in early July.

Later in the same month, Victoria Park in east London will host another annual music festival that is sure to prove to be a particular treat for hip-hop fans.

That’s because some of the biggest names from the genre are set to appear at this eagerly-awaited event, including Nas.

The New York-born MC is currently celebrating 20 years in the business by performing tracks from his debut (and landmark) album Illmatic, which is widely recognised to be one of the most influential records in the history of the genre.

There are, however, plenty of alternative acts that are sure to get the crowd moving, such as M.I.A. and A$AP Rocky, who is an emerging force in the hip-hop world.

So, if you’re a fan of rap, this is one event that you simply cannot miss this summer, given the impressive line-up.
