Among the many features that helps to make London one of the world’s must-visit cities is its rich and enviable reputation for theatre and musical entertainment.
There are loads of great theatres in the capital, many of which attract some of the top names from the world of entertainment.
And so regardless of the time of year you’re intending to travel to London, you won’t be disappointed by what’s on offer.
Here, we’re going to provide a guide to some of the best shows that are currently being staged in London.
The Book of Mormon
Created by the makers of the controversial US sitcom South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon is currently one of the most popular shows in the city.
This brilliant musical tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries, who have been sent to a remote village in Uganda.
Here, they find that a warlord is threatening the local population and in an attempt to resolve the situation, they try to share the Book of Mormon.
However, they have trouble getting their point across to the local people, who spend much of their time worrying about everyday troubles in that part of the world, namely Aids, famine and poverty.
The show, which opened in the US in 2011, has been tremendously well received by critics and theatregoers – and is definitely worth seeing for yourself if you get the opportunity.
Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, the Lion King is another of London’s most popular theatre shows and is especially popular among young children.
The musical features songs made by Sir Elton John, who was also an influential force behind the creation of the film.
The show, which debuted in London in 1999, is based on the Disney production and is the fourth longest-running show on Broadway.
It has recieved a hugely positive reaction from critics down the years and is well worth seeing if you’re a fan of the film.
For something a little more classical, however, you may wish to enjoy a new production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Barbican.
It was recently announced that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is to appear in Hamlet in London next year.
Previewing the show, Lyndsey Turner, who is to direct the play for Sonia Friedman Productions, explained that she was "thrilled" to have been given the opportunity to work with such a revered star.
Cumberbatch, meanwhile, recently told the Telegraph of his desire to play the role that he has now been given. "It's a role I've been interested in for a long time," he commented. "I don't know if there is such a thing as a right age to play the part, but 36 or 37 seems appropriate to me."
It has been announced that the show is to be staged at the iconic Barbican Theatre in October 2015 and booking details will be confirmed in May.
There are, of course, plenty of alternative shows being staged in London – your task, quite simply, is to choose the one that’s right for you!
