Road Safety Week 2019

It’s Road Safety Week and we’ve been busy supporting the charity Brake with their initiative to ‘Step Up For Safe Streets’.

All this week we have been taking part in various activities held by the Driver Training teams at The Kings Ferry Group. It has been a Group wide effort with the teams at The Kings Ferry, Clarkes of London, Stewarts Coaches and Woods Coaches all getting involved and helping raise money for this fantastic cause. 


To kick off the week-long activities, we were out in the yard at 4am cooking delicious bacon and sausage rolls for our early morning drivers. Needless to say, they went on their way with satisfied bellies and fuel for the day.

During the day, most of our commuter drivers stay at the Millwall coach park until their evening commute. So, we went up there to deliver some online refresher training on-board one of our luxury VIP vehicles which is the perfect mobile classroom!

After a day with the drivers, we turned our focus to the office staff. The dress code for the day was ‘Red’ to symbolise Road Safety Week by Brake.

And in true Kings Ferry Group style we held a ‘Bake for Brake’, where bakers were pitted against each other in a bid to win a rather fetching apron. The winner of the ‘Bake for Brake’ for The Kings Ferry was our Group Driver Training Manager, Simon, who also helped set up the initiative (possible results fixing we think?!) But congratulations nonetheless!

Under the supervision of the Driver Training Team, the office staff were also invited to get behind the wheel of one of our coaches to complete a couple of laps around the yard. With 0 accidents and some pretty impressive skills on show, we might have some new coach drivers coming through the Driver Training Academy soon!


This was the day all the drivers looked forward to, the unmissable Driver Skills Challenge. Over the past couple of weeks drivers from far and wide (across the Group) had been nominating a driver to represent their depot and take on the ultimate challenge! We had drivers from The Kings Ferry, Clarkes of London, Stewarts Coaches and Woods Coaches battle to win the coveted Driver Skills Trophy and be named our Champion!

The drivers took on a series of challenges; theory and hazard perception, reversing and manoeuvring, emergency evacuation and safety announcements! Each challenge was overseen by the Driver Training Team and judged under the watchful eye of Simon and a number of Group Directors.

After calculating the results from each challenge, and re-calculating, we had a winner. A huge congratulations to Richard who was representing Leicester based Woods Coaches on being crowned our Driver Skills Champion! Managing Director, Ian Fraser and the new Kings Ferry Group recruit, Simon the Safety Bear were on hand to present the prestigious award and congratulate all our incredible drivers!

Before our drivers got to their coaches in the early hours of the morning, we hid some surprises on-board. As part of their early morning checks, our drivers had to find TWO delicious bags of sweets. After being fuelled by sugar our drivers took off for their morning duties.

We made our way up to Millwall coach park to deliver some more online training courses which have been a huge success. Our drivers have been taking time out of their break to learn about how we can help make our roads safer for everyone.

Road Safety Week isn’t just about keeping our drivers and office staff safe, it’s about helping to keep our community safe too. With the help of our mascot Simon the Safety Bear, we visited Cedar Academy in Strood to deliver our Travel Smart Sessions to KS1 and KS2 pupils. The children were invited on-board our luxury VIP mobile classroom where they took part in activities aimed to give them the tools and knowledge to stay safe near roads and when on their school trips.

We would like to say thank you to all the companies across our Group for taking part in this initiative and helping raise awareness for such as fantastic cause, Road Safety Week by Brake. Together we have raised £100 which we are incredibly proud of!

The Anti-Bullying Tour With Diana Award Ambassador James Okulaja

The Kings Ferry Group have teamed up with Anti-Bullying Ambassador James Okulaja (AKA Oktave) to embark upon an Anti-Bullying tour around local schools delivering important sessions on anti-bullying and being safe on social media.

Students from Hempstead Junior School, St Margarets Junior School, Rainham Mark Grammar School, Thames View Primary School and Twydall Primary School were be invited on-board Kings Ferry VIP coach, where James delivered presentations in support of Anti-Bullying Week 2019. The sessions have been created to help build skills and confidence in young people, encouraging them to stand up to bullying in their own schools and giving them the knowledge they need to be safe on social media.


James Okulaja is an anti-bullying ambassador for The Diana Award. He is one of 25,000 ambassadors in the UK and Ireland helping to tackle hate crime by raising awareness and delivering campaigns on anti-bullying. As an ambassador for The Diana Award, he is trained by the Diana Anti-Bullying Campaign to help educate his peers on bullying, lead campaigns, promote a culture which celebrates our differences and helps keep young people safe both online and offline.

When James isn’t campaigning in schools, he writes music based on his own experiences hate crime under the alias Oktave. These songs portray strong messages about positivity and standing up to bullies. Oktave’s recent song ‘Team’ has been viewed over 30,000 times on YouTube, almost as many views as his previous song ‘Oso Saucy’ which has been viewed 34,000 times. 

The Diana Award

The Diana Award is a charity set up in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales and her belief that young people have the power to change the world. 
The charity has three main campaigns that focus on young people and change. The Mentoring scheme offers a series of group sessions to help young people gain an insight into employment and career skills training. The charity’s flagship Award programme recognises the young people driving a positive change in the world, including James Okulaja. While the Anti-Bullying campaign focuses on a positive change in the attitudes and behaviour of young people. 
The Anti-Bullying campaign is supported by HRH The Duke of Cambridge and works to change the attitude surrounding bullying by delivering sessions to schools from Ambassadors like James.  

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week takes place from Monday 11th November to Friday 15th November 2019 and is an event which encourages schools in England to come together to help stop bullying. This year’s theme is ‘Change Starts With Us’, with the aim that a small change can make a big difference. 

Our Support

The Kings Ferry Group are a firm supporter of James Okulaja’s work against hate crime and bullying. For the anti-bullying tour they have dedicated one of their special VIP coaches to the cause to help James deliver his presentation on. 
This isn’t the first time The Kings Ferry Group have supported James with his work, back in September they provided a VIP coach to transport James and his team around filming locations for his music video ‘Team’. A large portion of the video ended up being filmed on-board the coach.

We're Eco-Friendly Inside & Out!

World Kindness Day Eco-Friendly Transport

World Kindness Day is upon us and we are showing our love for the planet by reducing our impact on the environment even more!

Our coaches are already a greener way to travel and Euro 6 compliant (Euro 6 is the latest set of standards introduced by the European Commission to reduce harmful pollutants from vehicle exhausts). But we can always find ways to be more eco-friendly; starting with our office.

Going Cupless 

We have over 50 people in our Gillingham head office all fuelled by tea and coffee. So much so that we easily go through a massive 20 litres of hot beverages per day!
After realising how many cups we go through on a daily basis and after learning that it takes a single waxed cup up to 30 years to decompose, we quickly decided that this needed to change. 
As of the 13th November 2019, we have made the decision to go cupless. There won’t be a waxed cup in sight, with all our employees being encouraged to bring in their own personal mugs (the perfect opportunity for them to dust of those Christmas mugs that have been hiding in the back of their cupboards!).

New Paper Waste Bins

While it is necessary for us to print certain documents, we have partnered with a local recycling company to provide us with a solution to effectively recycle our paper waste and monitor the waste we are generating. 
The installation of new paper waste bins around the office has helped us reduce our environmental impact. And so we don’t forget to take the recycling bins out, the recycling company comes to the office on a weekly basis to collect and recycle our paper waste. 
We are always thinking of new ways in which we can help save the planet and are continuously working to make our coaches even more eco-friendly. 

Future Innovation

Our parent company, National Express, are running trials on the first fully electric buses in Coventry, Birmingham and Solihull. Although electric cars have been around for a while, this technology is relatively new in the bus and coach industry. 
We’re confident that once the trials on the electric buses are successful, it will not be long until the technology reaches the coach industry.

The official music video for Team by James Okulaja has been released. 

James Okulaja AKA Oktave has released his latest track ‘Team’ with the help of local sponsors The Kings Ferry, McDonald’s Chatham and the Medway Rugby Club. 
The anti-bullying ambassador for the charity The Diana Award, uses his incredible talent to raise awareness around social issues. James is one of 25,000 ambassadors in the UK and Ireland who help create campaigns to tackle cyber-bullying and hate crime. He has worked with the likes of Google, Snapchat and Facebook, as well as HRH Prince William. 

The Message Behind The Song

Team carries with it a strong message to the hate crime James has endured. He explains, “TEAM is about lifting up the people around me, exaggerating the excellence of the people I surround myself with and amplifying the fact that we don’t care about the hate we get or approval from society. We will still be successful regardless of people’s negative opinions.”

Exclusive Preview

Before the premiere, James came to our head office in Gillingham to give an exclusive preview of the finished music video. The reaction to it was brilliant, both the Executive and Marketing team loved it and we cannot wait to see what reaction it gets in public. The video has already attracted almost 4,000 views on YouTube in just 3 days!

A Guide To Surviving Your Office Christmas Party

The annual office Christmas party is coming up, so be prepared for dodgy dancing, festive jumpers and loose lips. 

Although Christmas parties are fun and considered a laugh, there are plenty of opportunities for embarrassing mishaps that you’ll live to regret the following day.
Here are some dos and donts when it comes to your office Christmas party… 

Do Dress To Impress

Dress smart – remember you are around your boss and colleagues so you want to avoid anything too risky. If in doubt ask your colleagues what they will be wearing and if all else fails you can’t go wrong with a Christmas jumper!

Don’t Get Over The Top Drunk

Christmas is a time to be merry but when it comes to alcohol and work dos, this can often lead to some embarrassing moments if not kept in check. Try to pace yourself and don’t let the mulled wine get the better of you and talk you into office politics. 

Do Avoid Social Media

Social media can be great but you don’t want to come across as that person who documents the whole evening from behind a screen. Enjoy being in the moment, take the time to have fun and get to know your colleagues on a personal level. 

Do Keep It Professional

Although a Christmas party is the time to unwind, remember who you’re with. You don’t want to get too familiar with your colleagues or behave inappropriately in front of your boss. Try to stay away from the gossipmongers if you’ve had a few drinks, you wouldn’t want to say something you might regret in the morning.

Don’t Make ‘The Move’

While there may be a lot of Dutch courage going around, an office party is not the time or place for a drunken hook-up. In a survey by Recruiting Times, 39% of people admitted to ‘intimate activity’ at the office Christmas party. Office flings can have a really serious effect on your career and reputation, so before you do anything, consider the consequences of your actions! 

Don’t Overindulge 

We all love free food but you don’t want to be remembered as the one who ate everything and left none for everyone else. While it’s a great idea to eat if you’re drinking alcohol, be mindful of your colleagues. They need to eat too! 

Do Have Fun

Most importantly, have fun! Get involved in the festive games and have a boogie on the dancefloor with your boss. It’s important to let your hair down and forget about work. This is your chance to show your colleagues a bit of personality, show them the relaxed and fun side of you. 

Do Arrange Travel To Get Home

Lastly, with all the free-flowing booze on offer it’s easy to forget how much you’ve drunk, even if you’re not feeling the effects. It’s best to be safe than sorry so make sure you have arranged transport for you and your colleagues at the end of the night. That way at least you will have a safe way of getting home if you’ve had one too many.

The Kings Ferry in Gillingham, Kent has won Large Coach Operator of the Year (over 50 vehicles) at the prestigious RouteOne Awards 2019. The winners were announced on Wednesday 2nd October at the annual award ceremony which recognises and celebrates achievements, innovation and the highest standards of excellence in the coach and bus industry. 
The Large Coach Operator of the Year award recognises a company that has a commitment to quality, innovation and customer service. The Kings Ferry won this accolade from a shortlist of six finalists.
Ian Fraser, Managing Director of The Kings Ferry Group was at the event to accept the award, he proudly says, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of the team from across all of our Group sites in Reading, Leicester, London and Kent for their continued support and hard work. It is thanks to every member of the team that we have won this award and I am honoured to be able to work alongside them all.”

Our Driver's Most Memorable Moments

Being a coach driver for one of the most luxurious coach companies in the UK certainly has its perks. Our drivers have met famous faces, attended weddings, had some uninvited guests and even appeared on TV! 

Racking up thousands of miles between them every week, they are the best storytellers on the road. Have a read of some of their most memorable moments…

A Fast Food Stop Off

We once had John Travolta and his family on-board. They were travelling on the Orient Express and during the coach leg of the journey, he asked the coach driver to drive into London with just him and his family on-board. He stopped off along the way and bought his family and the driver a McDonalds. 

The Biggest Boyband in the World

During the London 2012 Olympics we transported a host of big names; Sir Paul McCartney, The Spice Girls, The Who and One Direction. One of our VIP drivers Kevin recalled how down to earth the One Direction members were. “They settled in the rear lounge and looked relaxed, they were really friendly and shook my hand as they left.” 

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Go VIP

Earlier this year, Billy Ocean performed live in 9 locations across the UK on ‘The Best of Billy Ocean’ tour. Billy and his team travelled on-board one of our VIP coaches, driven by Daniel. 
“I turned up to work just like any other day and checked my pigeon hole for the jobs I had coming up. I couldn’t believe what I’d been given, the Billy Ocean tour! I was buzzing, I heard that something big had come in a few days before but never imagined it would be assigned to me. Definitely a highlight of my career meeting Billy Ocean, what an honour!”
Not only was Daniel invited backstage where he was able to get some photos of the singer and his band but he was also given complimentary tickets to watch the show.

The 28 Day Battle

Our VIP driver Frank embarked upon an incredible 28-day trip with Prime Minister David Cameron during his Conservative campaign back in 2010. “I found him to be very approachable, interesting and friendly. This trip was very enlightening and I would enjoy doing a trip like this again if given the opportunity.”
Shortly after the campaign came to a close, Frank received a letter through the post thanking him for his service.
The letter read, “ Dear Frank, 
Thank you very much for your commitment and hard work during the election campaign. 
It was down to your constant dedication that we were able to visit such a high number of marginal seats and meet so many members of the public. 
I know that everyone who travelled on the campaign coaches was impressed not only with the professionalism and expertise of your driving, but also the politeness and high level of customer service that you provided. I am also hugely grateful to you for the commitment you gave during the final 36 hour campaign. Without you, this simply would not have been possible. Getting Cold Feet

Our Managing Director, Ian Fraser was asked to present an award at the Music Week Awards alongside actor James Nesbitt OBE. Before walking on stage the event organisers told Ian he would only need to open the envelope and announce the winner, it sounded simple enough. However, when Ian walked out on stage there was an autocue. First it showed James’ script which was a couple of sentences and then it showed Ian’s script followed by a HUGE paragraph that he had to read out. Panic set it and Ian cut straight to opening the envelope without saying a word! James was laughing on stage and said, “I love it when these things go wrong!”

Where’s Woody?

Our VIP Driver Frank had the exciting opportunity to drive the ‘Rest of the World’ at Soccer Aid 2010. He met some great legends such as, Jamie Redknapp, Zidane, Mike Myers and Woody Harrelson. Frank recalls one day when he saw Woody Harrelson walk down by the river without any security guards, thinking that was a bit odd. Shortly after, a load of security guards ran out towards Frank asking if he’d seen Woody to which he said, “Yes, he walked down by the river!” When they finally found him, he was playing football in an enclosed pitch with a load of kids! 
Frank was with the ‘Rest of the World’ team for a full week driving them to their training ground at Fulham, before taking them to the Soccer Aid Match at Manchester United’s ground. He even got given a full breakfast from Woody Harrelson!

“I had the pleasure of being with Santander and taking the president of the company and his family to the 2010 Silverstone Grand Prix. One evening, the Santander president invited English Formula 1 Driver, Lewis Hamilton to join him for dinner and I drove them to the restaurant on-board the VIP coach.”
“He was a very polite and kind person, it was a pleasure to meet all of the Santander team and Mr Lewis Hamilton.”, says VIP Driver, Frank.

The Bodyguard

Our VIP driver was with Whitney Houston for three days in Manchester while she was performing at Manchester Arena. She travelled with a huge entourage and a lot of security. “I remember thinking her bodyguards were massive and really scary!”, recalls Frank.

Strictly Business

Our VIP Driver Frank ended up in the local newspaper after driving the Strictly Come Dancing professionals and celebrities from BBC Television Centre in London to Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. “It’s a really fun job because they’re all such nice people. They treat me really well and there’s always someone laughing. Everyone has a bit of a sweet fight at the beginning of the journey on Friday.”, says Frank. 
Amongst the celebrities was Maidstone MP Ann Widdecombe. Speaking on Ann, Frank said, “We stopped at the services on the M6 and she got mobbed by fans there. She’s a lovely woman, as is Pamela Stephenson.”
However, not all the celebrities got on at the BBC Television Centre, “I had to pick up Matt Baker from Oxford services and his little boy sat in the driver’s seat and pretended to drive the coach, which was lovely.”
Frank didn’t just have the professionals and contestants on-board, the judges came on too. “They used to set up the judges in the rear lounge, including Len Goodman. They would hook up the coach TV’s and watch the celebrities and dancers doing their rehearsals.”, said Frank.

This major philanthropic event was held in support of allergy research at Evelina London Children’s Hospital.  The event was held on 21st September 2019 and raised over £1.7m.  One of the highlights of the show was the collaboration between Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and world-renowned artist Marc Quinn who will now design a bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom featuring the iris of the winning bidder’s daughter.

First Year Anniversary For Stewarts Coach Group & The Kings Ferry Group

On the 12th September 2018 The Kings Ferry Group acquired Stewarts Coach Group Limited, an award winning independent coach business with bases in Reading and Leicester.  Stewarts provides corporate travel and private hire services as well as operating an established day tour and holiday programme, incorporating the brands Woods Coaches, Woods Tours and Stewarts Tours.  In order to ensure a smooth transition to the new ownership, the existing Managing Director of Stewarts Coach Group, Andy Cotton stayed with the business to drive business growth opportunities.  One year on and Stewarts and Woods are celebrating substantial growth and success.

The acquisition last year sparked an ambitious strategy focusing on a significant increase in revenue and profits across the Stewarts and Woods brands.  A new marketing strategy, which rolled out new product offerings to passengers, as well as developments in key areas of the business, has seen a substantial increase in revenue for FY19 particularly the Woods Holidays Programme, which is on target to hit a 23% year on year increase in revenue.
The fleet investment has certainly benefited Stewarts and Woods.  At Woods this first year saw the introduction of the very first Double Deck Coach as well as the start of a new airport service from Stansted Airport to Manchester and Liverpool.  The coach fleet has increased from 16 to 25 vehicles and an additional 18 full-time drivers have joined the team.  The ongoing increase to the coach fleet will offer a wider choice of vehicles on the tours programme and bring in new business opportunities.
The drivers at Stewarts have certainly been kept busy with a significant increase in the amount of transfers being completed in July 2019 than the previous year. The drivers have been enjoying the variety of different work this year including international travel.
When it comes to employment The Kings Ferry Group has not held back in supporting Stewarts and Woods.  As well as several new appointments there has been an increase in opportunities for both employees and workflows. New positions have been created in Training and Compliance, Sales, Mechanics and Drivers.

Anti-Bullying Ambassador, James Okulaja, Tackles Hate Crime With A Brand New Song

When the opportunity arose for us to sponsor the aspiring rapper James Okulaja AKA Oktave in his new music video, we couldn’t say no.

The anti-bullying ambassador for the charity The Diana Award, uses his incredible talent to raise awareness around social issues. James is one of 25,000 ambassadors in the UK and Ireland who help create campaigns to tackle cyber-bullying and hate crime. He has worked with the likes of Google, Snapchat and Facebook, as well as HRH Prince William.

Using his youth as an advantage, James is able to connect with young people when discussing the importance of keeping safe online. With the support from Kent Police, he regularly communicates his message in schools through assemblies and workshops. More recently James has discovered a new way of getting his message out there – through his love of music. 
James’ previous song ‘Oso Saucy’ is about rising above bullies and haters. The music video was sponsored and filmed in the popular dessert café, Creams, in Chatham Dockside. Since being released at the Medway Youth Awards, the video has received over 30,000 views and has gained the praise of several celebrities, including lead guitarist of popular boyband The Vamps, James McVey.


Off the back of the success of his first music video, James decided to write his next song ‘TEAM’. A song which carries a strong message around hate crime. James explains, “TEAM is about lifting up the people around me, exaggerating the excellence of the people I surround myself with and amplifying the fact that we don’t care about the hate we get or approval from society. We will still be successful regardless of people’s negative opinions.”
When one of our Operations Controllers, Ollie Taylor approached us and told us about the work James had been doing, we had to invite him in for a chat. James came to The Kings Ferry head office to discuss a sponsorship opportunity and it was clear our values aligned.

We arranged for one of our luxurious rear-lounge VIP coaches to transport James and his crew between filming locations. We also let them take over our Kings Ferry VIP Instagram to offer exclusive behind the scenes footage.

We weren’t the only ones who felt inspired by James’ anti-bullying message, the Medway Rugby Club and McDonald’s Chatham owner Gian Chahal kindly sponsored the music video and allowed James and his team to film exclusively on the rugby grounds and inside the McDonalds restaurant. They were gifted free meals by owner Gian, and given delicious Apple Pies for the coach journey. In addition, they were also allowed behind the counter in the fast-food restaurant where the team made their own iconic Big Macs!

The music video for TEAM by Oktave will be released on 11th October 2019 in association with Kent Police for Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Our updated terms and conditions outlines the new way in which we will be delivering our coach hire solutions. We have enhanced our internal processes to offer you two distinct services when booking coach hire which includes: a detailed pre-planning stage (Sourcing Booking Service), followed by the fulfilment of your hire (Travel Service).

Sourcing Booking Service

This is the pre-planning stage is around journey planning, compliance and sourcing of vehicle. This will include the following services, which will be completed upon the acceptance of your bookings: -
1. A detailed itinerary including driver plan
2. Pick-up and drop off locations (confirmation of a suitable location based on hirer requirement)

Stay up to date 

A Brexit deal has been agreed in principle with the EU. Both the UK and the EU need to approve and sign the withdrawal agreement.If the withdrawal agreement is not signed by the UK and the EU, the UK could still leave with no deal on 31 October 2019.We have been advised by the Department of Transport that there will be changes that may affect you travelling to Europe in the event of a no-deal Brexit. 
We will continually update this page with the latest Brexit related travel information. However, please be advised to check the Government website for the latest information on a regular basis if you are planning to travel or are travelling into Europe in the immediate future. 
You can sign up to get email alerts from the Government to get the latest information.
You can also get travel advice for the country you’re visiting, including local information about travel, laws and customs, and money.

Passports: Check if you need to renew

Did you know you may need to renew your British passport earlier if you’re travelling after Brexit.
On the day you travel, your passport will need to:
have at least 6 months’ validity
be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left)
If you do not renew your passport, you may not be able to travel to most EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
If you are unsure if your passport will allow you to travel, you can use a Government tool to check whether your passport is valid for the country you’re visiting.
Please note, it usually takes 3 weeks to renew your passport. Although, there is a premium service if you need it sooner.
These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland. You can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay.

Healthcare: Check you’re covered

You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad.
After Brexit your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card may not be valid.
It’s particularly important you get travel insurance with the right cover if you have a pre-existing medical condition. This is because the EHIC scheme covers pre-existing conditions, while many travel insurance policies do not.
You can read advice on buying travel insurance with the right cover.


There may be changes after Brexit. What these are depend on how you’re travelling.
However you travel, check before you leave for any delays or disruption.

Flights, ferries, cruises, Eurostar and Eurotunnel, bus and coach services

After Brexit, the following will be able to run as before:
ferries and cruises
the Eurostar and Eurotunnel
bus and coach services between the UK and the EU
If you’re flying:
airport security procedures will not change for direct flights to and from the UK
there should not be delays at airport security if you change flights in EU airports
Bus and coach services to non-EU countries, for example Switzerland or Andorra, may be effected and as a result may not be able to run. The government is working to make sure that these continue to run with minimal or no disruption. Please check the Government website for updates or contact your dedicated travel consultant if you have any further questions.

Entering other countries

Visas: you should not need one for short trips

After Brexit, you will not need a visa for short trips, according to European Commission proposals. You could stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You may need a visa or permit to stay for longer, or to work or study.
Please check the Government website for updates. 
When the rules are confirmed, information about how to get a visa if you need one will be on each country’s travel advice page.
Travel to Ireland will not change after Brexit. 

Border control: you may have to show your return ticket and money

At border control, you may need to:
show a return or onward ticket
show you have enough money for your stay
use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing

Other Brexit changes

You’ll need to declare cash of £10,000 or more (or the equivalent in another currency) if you take it between the UK and any other country.
If you’re a business:
you may need to make a customs declaration if you take goods with you to sell abroad or use for business
find out what else you need to do to prepare your business for Brexit

Snowdonia National Park Mount Snowdon
Snowdonia is a spectacular National Park in northern Wales surrounded by mountains and glacial landforms. It is home to the highest peak in Wales, Mount Snowdon. Many have scaled the mountain as part of the National Three Peaks Challenge. However, for those who don’t fancy hiking to the top the iconic Snowdon Mountain Railway will take you up to the summit. Mount Snowdon has some of the most beautiful views from its peak, treating its visitors to views across the sea to Ireland.  
Snowdonia has plenty of activities to do in addition to hiking to the top of its famous peak. Take a refreshing dip in the deep, clear waters of the Watkins Path waterfalls. The park also has countless mountain biking trials for you to discover. If you’re looking for a thrill why not whizz along the sky on the world’s fastest zip line!

Other treasures from the Museum’s unique collection of more than 80 million specimens can be seen across its many permanent galleries, which includes one of the world’s most impressive dinosaur exhibitions. The Museum has a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions which includes its world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. There is also an exciting after-hours events programme featuring early morning yoga, silent discos and dinosaur sleepovers.
With regular family exhibitions, plenty interactive activities and action-packed school holiday programmes, there's something for everyone at the Natural History Museum.

Tate Modern

A day out in London isn't complete without a trip to Tate Modern. Britain's national museum of modern and contemporary art from around the world is housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the banks of the Thames. The awe-inspiring Turbine Hall runs the length of the entire building and you can see amazing work for free by artists such as Cézanne, Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Rothko, Dalí, Pollock, Warhol and Bourgeois.

Covent Garden

Marvel at street performers in Covent Garden. Since the 1660s Covent Garden has never missed a chance to put on a performance. The first record of Covent Garden street entertainment came in 1662, when Samuel Pepys’ diary notes that a marionette show featuring a character named Punch took place on the Piazza. Today, the custom continues with a whole host of daily performances you can watch for free!

Camden Market started off as a small arts and crafts fair in the backyard of Dingwalls. Originally it was temporary and only open on Sundays, however its popularity grew fast. Changing of the Guard

Changing of the Guards London

Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is the ceremony where The Queen's Guard hands over responsibility for protecting Buckingham Palace and St. James's Palace to the New Guard. Changing the Guard begins on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace at 11:00 sharp following a march by a detachment of the Old Guard, with musical support, from St. James's Palace and the New Guard led by a Regimental Band from Wellington Barracks.
The ceremony lasts for around 45 minutes and we advise that you arrive at Buckingham Palace no later than 10:15 to bag yourself a good spot amongst the crowds.
Watching the Changing of the Guard is free of charge and no tickets are required

At The Great Lines On Armed Forces Day

On the 29th June, we were invited to an Armed Forces Day event at Gillingham’s Great Lines Park.

This fantastic event saw the local community come together to show their support for servicemen and women.

On The Day 

Saturday 29th June was officially ‘the hottest day of the year’ with temperatures soaring to 31C, but that didn’t put people off.

The event saw displays and parades from various divisions; Royal Engineers, the Infantry, Royal Navy and many more. 

Our Invite

As part of the Armed Forces Covenant, we were invited to exhibit at the Great Lines event.

Our recruitment team were on-site with our new training coach to discuss employment opportunities after service. The event was a huge success for us, it attracted over 20 academy sign ups and 6 new driver recruits!

A Couple of Special Visitors

We had a special visit on-board our training coach from the Deputy Mayor of Medway, Habib Tejan. Our Group Training and Development Manager, Simon Le Mar was on-hand to discuss The Kings Ferry and our new Driver Training Academy.

Glastonbury Festival 2019

Glastonbury Festival is the UK’s biggest music festival and the largest Greenfield festival in the world! 

2019 saw the annual festival return to Worthy Farm following a fallow year. It was held over the 26th–30th June and saw an impressive 175,000 festival-goers attend. 

Big Names

Glastonbury Festival has always been home to some of the biggest names on the planet. David Bowie headlined the festival back in 1971, the only year the festival was free. The 1980’s saw headlining acts such as; Hawkwind, Van Morrison, UB40 and The Cure. The 90’s brought with it a rock and roll vibe, whilst the noughties had something for everyone; pop, rock and electronic! 
This year’s festival was headlined by The Killers, Stormzy and returning for the fourth time, The Cure. The infamous Pyramid stage saw Stormzy sport a Banksy vest, Kylie Minogue’s emotional Glastonbury debut and a surprise speech from Sir David Attenborough praising the festival for going plastic-free which secured the biggest cheer of the event.

Transporting the Thousands

When 175,000 people descend onto one farm in the middle of Glastonbury, it’s no surprise the council fear the overwhelming traffic levels. That’s where the ticket and coach combo’s come in, and subsequently us!
When it comes to complex transport requirements, there aren’t many that top Glastonbury. For years we’ve been transporting thousands of festival-goers and this year was no different as we transported an enormous 44,000 passengers. 

The Secrets behind This Mammoth Task 

Transporting 44,000 people is no easy task, it requires planning - lots of planning and plenty of coffee!
We started arranging the transport for Glastonbury at least 8 months in advance as 875 movements took place. This is where our network of sub-contractors were maximised. Our own fleet and network of operators transported passengers from 29 cities across the UK including; Edinburgh, Newcastle, Norwich, London, Exeter and Swansea. 
With over 23,000 Glastonbury tickets to distribute to passengers, it was paramount that we get the right tickets to the right coaches. Did you know, each ticket has its passengers photograph on it? In hindsight, this could have been a logistical nightmare, but luckily we’re pretty experienced at it. 

The Force of the Operation

120,000 miles, 44,000 passengers, 23,000 tickets, 875 movements with a force of 362 drivers were at the wheels of this operation. 
We’ve asked our drivers time and time again what they enjoyed about transporting passengers to Glastonbury. In the past, many have said it’s the atmosphere on the coaches, the buzz around the festival but this year we had a totally different response. 
This year the thing the drivers enjoyed THE most was the lack of mud – there wasn’t a patch of mud in sight. We had clean coaches all round and welly sales were possibly at an all-time low!

Amongst the thousands of festival-goers on our coaches, we transported the amazing Langa Methodist Church Choir. Originating from Cape Town, South Africa, the choir travelled to Glastonbury for their Sunday opening slot on the Pyramid Stage. Where It All Began

Over 10 years ago, The Kings Ferry Group won a tender for See Tickets. After undergoing a trial at Paddock Wood’s Hop Farm, we were asked to transport festival-goers to Glastonbury. Needless to say, we delivered and the rest is history! 

Glasto 2020

Now that Glastonbury Festival 2019 is over, it’s not long before we start arranging the transport for 2020. Every November we get to work arranging the hundreds of coaches needed for the festival the following June. 
Next year Glastonbury Festival celebrates its 50th Anniversary and we can only imagine that 2020 will be bigger and better than ever before, definitely not one to be missed!

The Armed Forces will always have a special place in our hearts at The Kings Ferry Group.

We have numerous employees from management to drivers, who come from a military background. Our support for the armed forces doesn’t just stop at employment, our chosen charity is Help for Heroes. A charity which provides lifelong support to service personnel and veterans who have sustained injuries, illnesses and wounds whilst serving in the British Armed Forces.  
Throughout the month of June we had the honour of being involved in multiple Armed Forces events. From transporting veterans to taking schools on battlefield tours, we have been all over the UK and Europe. 

75th D Day Anniversary

At the beginning of June, Stewarts Coaches, part of The Kings Ferry Group, were asked to transport veterans, members of parliament and the press for the 75th D Day Anniversary. The commemorations took place in Portsmouth and saw some impressive displays from the Red Arrows. All our drivers noted how emotional the day was and that they were honoured to have been a part of it.

Armed Forces Day is a day to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces. From currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets, Armed Forces Day is a day dedicated to recognising the Armed Forces community. Every year events take place all over the country to celebrate this day, this year it’s taking place on Saturday 29th June. 

The Armed Forces Day Event

We’ve been invited to exhibit at the Armed Forces Day being held at Gillingham’s Great Lines Heritage Park. This free event is open to the public and is run in partnership with the local Royal School of Military Engineering. On the day they will be displays and parades from various services including; Royal Engineers, the Infantry, Gurkhas, Royal Navy, Royal Marine Reserves, tri-service Cadet Forces and many more. 
Armed Forces Day is a fantastic day out for all the family with plenty of activities to take part in. Children will be able to take part in their own obstacle course and go on the rides at the giant funfair. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a helicopter fly-in, as well as listening to performances from the Military Wives Choir and bandstand concerts.  
The Kings Ferry will be one of the many exhibitors showing support for servicemen and women. We were invited to exhibit as we are part of the Armed Forces Covenant.  

Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge to those who are serving or have served, along with their families, to be treated with fairness and respect within their communities. As part of National Express, we have achieved Gold Award holder status. National Express was the first company to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and continue to show support. We are also on the Employer Recognition Scheme, supporting those looking to start a new career after the military. 

Ex-Forces Recruitment

As a recognised employer for ex-service personnel, we are proud to be exhibiting on Armed Forces Day providing an employment opportunity. We have numerous ex-forces employees ranging from managers and office staff to coach drivers. Our ex-forces staff have come from various services; the Infantry, Royal Air Force and Commonwealth Soldiers. 
Driver Training Academy Coach
Our Driver Training Academy employs those looking to start a new career as a Coach Driver. The fully paid training programme aims to provide support and tuition to drivers getting their PCV licence. Not only do we train unqualified PCV drivers but we also offer CPC training and refresher courses. Those who are successful in the Driver Training Academy will receive a full-time position, earning up to £32,000 a year basic salary. 
Our recruitment team will be exhibiting with the Driver Training vehicle at the Great Lines on Saturday 29th June. The team, headed by ex-serviceman Simon Le Mar, will be there on the day to answer questions and take sign ups.

75th D Day Anniversary

On the 5th June, the 75th D Day Anniversary commemorations took place in Portsmouth. 300 veterans and 60,000 members of public attended. Alongside heads of state from around the world, including HRH Queen Elizabeth II, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. 
The event saw the famous Red Arrows flypast followed by RAF aircrafts and Daks over Normandy. The MV Boudicca set sail before sunset carrying 300 Normandy veterans across the channel to Normandy. The ship was escorted by a Royal Navy vessel, representing the famous crossing 75 years before.

How it happened

One of our newest members of The Kings Ferry Group, Stewarts Coaches, secured the contract to provide transport for the D Day Anniversary. The event required 27 coaches to transport veterans, members of parliament and the press. The coaches came from every member of the group; The Kings Ferry, Clarkes of London, Stewarts Coaches and Woods Coaches. 

On the day 

Heading to Portsmouth for an early 4am start, the drivers shuttled invited guests to and from the event until 8pm that evening. 
We had drivers from all four businesses on-site, including some ex-Commonwealth Soldiers who wore their medals in honour.

The event was a huge success with organisers saying, “it was the best delivery of a transport plan we have seen”. The veterans were extremely grateful and expressed their heartfelt thanks to the team at the end of the day. 
To be asked to provide transport for such a historic commemoration was incredibly rewarding. With everyone involved saying it was an emotional day that everyone was honoured to be a part of.  

Everyone’s A Winner at Soccer Aid 2019

The world’s biggest charity football match, Soccer Aid, kicked off at the weekend and what a fantastic event it was. Celebrities and football legends came together to ‘defend play for every child’, raising money and awareness for UNICEF UK. Everyone was a winner at Soccer Aid as a record-breaking £6.7 million was raised on the night!

A Huge Honour

We are extremely proud to have supported Soccer Aid for the 7th year. As part of our support we wrapped two of our VIP coaches in this years’ Soccer Aid livery. With two coaches jam-packed with famous faces, from the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, to Olympic Gold Medallist, Sir Mo Farah, the atmosphere on-board was electric to say the least. Along with our two fantastic drivers who represented our company exceptionally, Gary Smith (England) and Simon Martin (World XI).

An Official State Visit

US President Donald Trump's UK State Visit, Coach Hire for Officials
At the beginning of June, US President Donald Trump landed in the UK for an official State Visit. He was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump. 
As the US President arrived into Stansted Airport on-board Air Force One, he was greeted by hundreds of security personnel and journalists. Amongst the crowds was our fleet of bright yellow and green coaches. The Kings Ferry had been tasked with transporting US Government Officials and American Security Personnel while the US President was in the UK.

Stating The Stats 

The US President’s State Visit saw 30 of our executive coaches transport hundreds of passengers, including delegates, security staff and the press from Stansted Airport or Biggin Hill to various locations across London. 
When booking coach hire for government officials it is recommended to book at least 2 months in advance to ensure the relevant documents are arranged for clearance. However, we recognise this is not always possible due to the nature of the events and therefore we always endeavour to meet the needs of the client as we did with the short notice on this event. 
US President Donald Trump State Visit To UK, Coach Hire For Delegates
The President’s three day trip saw him meet with The Queen, Prince Charles, PM Theresa May and even Piers Morgan. Whilst in the UK, Trump also visited and took part in some fantastic events. Trump was invited to enjoy; a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace; an afternoon tea with Prince Charles and Camilla; breakfast with PM Theresa May; and the 75th D Day Anniversary commemorations in Portsmouth.

Two of our VIP coaches have been wrapped in the fantastic Soccer Aid 2019 graphics, ready to transport the two teams to the main charity event. 
Soccer Aid is an annual charity event that has raised over £24 million in aid of UNICEF UK. The event is a friendly-style football match between two teams, England and the Soccer Aid World XI (formerly known as Rest of the World). This years’ Soccer Aid will kick-off at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge at 7:30pm on Sunday 16th June. 

The Match 

The world’s biggest charity football match brings together celebrities and football legends in a battle to defend play for every child. The game is made up of two teams, England and Soccer Aid World XI.

England Team

Captaining the reigning champions, England, will be Gold Olympic Medallist, Sir Mo Farah. Joining his England 2019 team is; former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, football star Jamie Redknapp, TOWIE royalty Mark Wright, fitness coach Joe Wicks, JLS star turned presenter Marvin Humes and guitarist Danny Jones. Fan favourite and regular Soccer Aid player, Ben Shepherd will also be joining the line-up. A Soccer Aid match wouldn’t be complete without some football legends; David Seaman, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, Glen Johnson, Joe Cole, Katie Chapman and Rachel Yankey. Managing the England team to victory again this year will be ‘Big Sam’ Allardyce, with his co-manager and the first female manager of Soccer Aid for Unicef, Susanna Reid.  

Soccer Aid World XI Team 

The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt is back to captain the Soccer Aid World XI team. After last years’ defeat, Bolt’s World XI team has a new and formidable line-up that would make even the French World Cup team quiver. Joining the World XI team is Love Island favourite Kem Cetinay and Line of Duty star Martin Compston, along with a host of celebrities including; Mrs Brown’s Boys Danny O’Carroll, singer Jack Savoretti, Rudimental star DJ Locksmith, freestyler Billy Wingrove, Westlife singer Nicky Byrne and Capital FM presenter Roman Kemp. Irish singer Niall Horan will also be joining the team for his second time. One of the most anticipated players joining the team this year is the legendary Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. Speaking of legends, the World XI team is also joined by Eric Cantona, Ricardo Cavalho, Robbie Keane, Michael Essien, Rosana Dos Santos Augusto, Francielle Manelo, Roberto Carlos and Robert Pires. Football managing legend and King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp will be managing the team alongside TV personality Piers Morgan.

Our History with Soccer Aid

The Kings Ferry have been providing coach transport for Soccer Aid since 2010!
Our VIP coaches are used to transport the star-studded line-up to the biggest charity match in the world. Each event year the coaches are wrapped in the Soccer Aid graphics. Between 2010 and 2018 the coaches were wrapped in the iconic Soccer Aid livery distinguishing each coach with either ‘England’ or ‘Rest of the World’ with their corresponding colour scheme.

In 2018 the Soccer Aid coaches were treated to a new brand identity designed by ITV Creative and Conran Design Group. The livery featured the faces of the England and World XI Captains, Soccer Aid co-founder Robbie Williams and the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt.

What is Soccer Aid? 

Soccer Aid is an annual charity event that has raised over £24 million in aid of Unicef UK. It was initiated by Unicef UK Ambassador Robbie Williams and TV Presenter Jonathan Wilkes back in 2006. The event started off as a biennial charity event before ITV joined forces with Unicef to make the event an annual one. Soccer Aid has continued to be one of the most popular charity events amongst both famous stars and the public who watch and support the cause in their millions.
With the event having only taken place 7 times so far, England are winning 5-2 against Soccer Aid World XI (formerly Rest of The World) in terms of overall wins. Last year could well have been a win for World XI but for the first time in England’s history, we won at a penalty shootout!
Soccer Aid 2018 saw the highest attendance in its history with almost 72,000 visitors at Manchester United’s Old Trafford, the largest club football stadium in the UK. This year is the first year Soccer Aid has moved to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge. 
While Soccer Aid is the world’s biggest charity football match, it doesn’t matter what the result is at the end of the day. This incredible charity which we are extremely proud to support funds a fantastic cause. The money raised from the ticket sales and public donations helps provide life-saving food, vaccines, clean water and toys for children around the world. Our experience in mass passenger transport

Major music festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds are subject to stringent planning controls by their local authorities. Restrictions are put in place to reduce local traffic disruption and pollution. In order to maximise ticket allocation, organisers had to ensure a certain proportion of visitors purchased a combined entrance and transport ticket. This is where we came to help.

The First To Pass Our Driver Training Academy

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Steven Fielding on passing his PCV test. Steven was the first recruit for the newly launched Driver Training Academy and we are so proud to welcome him to The Kings Ferry family.

“I would like to congratulate Steven on passing his test and hope you continue to learn from our great driving team who have so much experience to pass on.”, says Simon Le Mar, Group Training and Development Manager.

The Training 

Steven joined us four weeks ago after hearing about our new Driver Training Academy and was the first to enrol in the programme. 

“Steven was a pleasure to train. He took instructions well and took on board all the feedback he was given and implemented it straight away within his driving”, explains Lee Marriott, Steven’s Trainer. 

Steven’s journey so far has taken him around the beautiful Kentish countryside and along the coast in our dedicated training coach. After four weeks of intense coach training and hard work, Steven passed his PCV test!
Now that Steven has his PCV licence, he will now undergo the induction course with the training team. After this he will embark on a three week training course with a mentor where he will learn his new job role. Steven will begin his mentor training with our commuter services and London pickups. He will then go onto private hires with our most experienced drivers to enable him the driving time needed and learn that side of the business. 

The Academy’s First Pass

The Kings Ferry are incredibly proud to welcome Steven to the company, he has been an excellent recruit and his hard work and dedication is the reason why we launched the Driver Training Academy.

Coaching The Saracens To Victory!

Over the weekend we coached the Saracens Rugby Club to the Champion Cup Final where they were victorious!  The Saracens took back the cup from last years’ Irish champions, Leinster Rugby, with a 20-10 win. In the past four seasons, the Saracens have won the Champion Cup an impressive three times.

We had the honour of transporting The Saracens, along with their families to Newcastle to win the Champion Cup against Leinster Rugby. As well as transporting the players and their families, we also provided transport for the club partners and VIP’s. All of whom enjoyed their journey on board Executive coaches.

Howletts Wild Animal Park is located near Canterbury, it is Kent’s original wildlife park. The animal park is committed to the conservation, breeding and reintroduction of rare and endangered species. Working in partnership with the internationally renowned animal conservation charity, The Aspinall Foundation, Howletts Animal Park is home to over 400 animals across 50 species. Wherever possible, these animals are returned to the wild.

Set on 90 acres of land, Howletts is a great day out for all the family. They have Kent’s only giant anteaters as well as being home to the only herd of African elephants in Kent and the largest herd in the UK. Located in Greenhithe, just outside Dartford, Bluewater Shopping Centre is the biggest shopping centre in Kent and is one of the biggest in the UK. The centre opened in 1999 and sees a whopping 27 million visitors each year!

Canterbury Cathedral welcomes visitors from around the world to revel in its rich history. While the cathedral is a working church and place of faith, visitors need to be mindful that it does regularly close for services and special events. If you are able to visit the Cathedral on a day that it’s open, it truly is a magnificent sight and one to tick off your bucket list. 

Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway


Known as “Kent’s Mainline in Miniature”, there’s nothing quite like a ride on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. This isn’t just any railway, this particular railway operates the most complete collection of one-third full-sized steam locomotives in the world. This world famous miniature railway is one of Kent’s top tourist attractions.

The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway begins its journey in the pretty town of Hythe. The track stretches 13 miles across the stunning coastline from Romney Marsh to Dungeness. The entire journey from Hythe to Dungeness takes just over an hour to complete but there are opportunities to get off and wander around the nearby towns. Each stop is a few minutes’ walk from the beach.



Diggerland is an adventure park in Rochester with a twist. It differs from your average adventure park because this park is all about diggers. From children’s birthday parties to corporate events, Diggerland is fun for everyone.

Experience the power behind a digger as you take control of these machines, race them against your friends and sit in the bucket of a 360 Excavator clinging onto dear life as you are spun around and around. Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve


Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve is located near Hythe, with stunning views over Romney Marsh. This animal park is the sister to Howletts Animal Park and also works in conjunction with the internationally renowned animal conservation charity, The Aspinall Foundation. As part of this charity, the animal reserve is committed to the conservation, breeding and reintroduction of rare and endangered species into the wild.

The park is set over an impressive 600 acres, with over 760 rare and endangered animals, across 90 species living here. Port Lympne is home to the UK’s most authentic safari experience, The African Experience, spanning 100 acres of free reining African animals. The park has the largest herd of Black Rhino in the UK as well as the only Giraffes in Kent. Other animals residing at the park include; Gorillas, Tigers, Lions, Leopards, Bears, Bison, Gibbons, Zebra, Wallaby and many more. The Chapel Down Winery


The Chapel Down Winery is located in the beautiful countryside near Tenterden. Visitors can take a guided tour of the vineyards to learn about how Chapel Down grow their vines and make the wine. Held in the ground of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, this event attracts more than 150,000 visitors including members of the Royal Family. The Chelsea Flower Show is renowned for being the world’s most famous flower show and this year it’s taking place on the 21-25th May.

One of the main highlights of the show is the world-class garden designs that are on display. From London to Paris with OUIBUS

OUIBUS London to Paris Coach Travel

OUIBUS is an international coach service that connects the major cities across Europe. A subsidiary of the French railway, SNCF, OUIBUS’s first hub was founded at Paris-Bercy. Their routes include the popular lines London-Paris, London-Lille and London-Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport. The London to Paris daily route operates 11 times a day, 4 day-time journeys and 7 night-time journeys.

The Contract

Previously, our parent company National Express UK held the contract for OUIBUS. The service was operated by The Kings Ferry but since National Express UK ceased all European operations, this led to the contract being ceased too.

Chris Burley, Group Operations Director for The Kings Ferry Group, has been working hard to contact OUIBUS direct and has successfully secured 2 weekend night services (culminating in 8 vehicle movements) across Fridays to Mondays, for The Kings Ferry’s London to Paris route.

From July 2019 through to September 2019, these will move from weekend to daily services.

This is a new venture for The Kings Ferry, as National Express controlled the operation beforehand. The Kings Ferry’s Operations team are now working directly with OUIBUS Base Care and we are hoping this will be the start of a successful and prosperous partnership where we will continue to supply a professional service with the aim of securing more routes in the future.

Get On-Board

With tickets from £16.99 per person each way from London to Paris, travelling by coach is a cheaper alternative to flying.  

Travelling with The Kings Ferry makes for a luxurious and comfortable journey. The vehicles used for the contract are our Mercedes-Benz Executive coaches wrapped in OUIBUS livery. Each of our coaches feature reclining seats, hot drinks facilities, reading lights, air conditioning, curtains, DVD player and screen, as well as a WC facility.

A Momentous Occasion at the South East Bus Festival 2019

The South East Bus Festival was a momentous occasion for the entire Group. It was the first time in which all four businesses from the Group had their fleet side-by-side, as well as being the first time most of the staff had met each other.

 “It was an absolutely brilliant day and was nice to showcase such an amazing fleet. It was great to meet people with such knowledge of The Kings Ferry Group, we all took the time to talk to each other and realise our future and growth together.”, says Jaimie Florea, Coach Driver at The Kings Ferry.

The show saw 154 buses and coaches exhibit, breaking their previous record from last year. We took 9 coaches and 1 bus from the Group’s fleet, the most amount of coaches brought by any one exhibitor to the show!

The Coaches

We brought coaches from each of our Group companies; The Kings Ferry, Clarkes of London, Stewarts Coaches, Woods Coaches and even one from our parent company, National Express – a right family day out! 

A last minute change was made to our fleet the day before the festival. We was originally planning on taking the OUIBUS livery but had a new VIP delivery that we couldn’t wait to show off.

We’re proud to announce that the unveiling of our Driver Training Academy was a huge success. We had people registering their interest on the day and have been receiving many phone calls with those expressing their interest in a new career.

The training coach is one of our ex-VIP coaches, a Scania Irizar i6 that has been modified. The inside is laid out as a mobile classroom with full kitchen and toilet facilities. 

The Driver Training Academy is for those looking to gain their PCV licence, CPC training or refresher training. We cover all costs of the training, while recruits are rewarded with a full time job with The Kings Ferry Group at the end of it. Supporting Demelza for 22 Years

Demelza Hospice and The Kings Ferry 22 Years

In March, The Kings Ferry and Demelza Hospice Care for Children celebrated 22 years of partnership. We first began supporting Demelza in 1996 and helped raise funds to build the main site in Sittingbourne which opened its doors in 1998. Since then, we’ve raised £15,000 to support the vital work Demelza do and donated free coach travel for family and staff events.

“Demelza Hospice Care for Children provides specialist care and emotional support for children with terminal conditions and their loved ones, so that they can enjoy their time together as a family, for as long as they have. As a charity, we are dependent on the generosity of our supporters to keep our services going. We are grateful to the many local businesses and individuals who support us, but our long-standing relationship with The Kings Ferry means a lot to us as it is rare to have worked with one company for more than two decades,” said Tamsyn Clark, Director of Fundraising at Demelza.

Speaking about the partnership, Head of Marketing at The Kings Ferry Group, Sam Adams, said: “The team at Demelza do an amazing job helping terminally ill children enjoy the best possible quality of life and it is a pleasure to support them in this work. We are proud to have provided coach hire for them and raised £15,000 over the past 22 years and this is thanks to all the team at The Kings Ferry – from our drivers and customer service managers to engineers and technicians – everyone has put their hands in their pockets at different times and together, we are helping Demelza to make a big difference for children and their families.”

In the past 22 years of supporting Demelza, we’ve raised money through a variety of ways including; raffles, bake sales, staff competitions, sponsorship challenges, dress down days, and coffee mornings. Recently, Garry Warren from our East Kent depot had been training for the Paris Marathon which he ran on the 14th April to raise money for the charity. We are also proud to sponsor Demelza’s Easter Egg Hunt on the 19th April for the first time.

Over the years the money raised has gone into development and maintenance of the hospice in Sittingbourne which was most recently rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Easter Fun with the Junk Orchestra

Join in the Easter fun at Leeds Castle on Friday 19th April to Monday 22nd April and see your children get creative at the Castle’s ‘mad hat’ making workshop. Throughout the event, The Junk Orchestra will be jamming with their instruments made from bits of old rubbish. They’ll also show your little ones how to make their own junk instrument, which they can take home to entertain you all through the evening. Finally, an Easter day out wouldn’t be complete without embarking on an Easter Trail through the glorious Leeds Castle grounds in search of a delicious chocolate reward!

The South East Bus Festival is one of the major highlights of the annual Heritage Transport Show. This fantastic and unmissable show will be taking place on Saturday 6th April at the Kent Showground, Detling. We will be exhibiting at the event for the 3rd consecutive year, showcasing a range of vehicles from across The Group. This year we have a huge surprise in store (but we are not giving away any clues until you read on!) – this is something that we are exclusively revealing at the show. So make sure you drop by to see us!


The Heritage Transport Show

The Heritage Transport Show attracts transport enthusiasts from all over the country. It's a celebration for heritage and vintage vehicles, from motorbikes to tractors and everything in between. This year the show is on track to hit a new record of 800 vehicles and 100 buses, making it one of the biggest heritage and vintage vehicle events in the South East. 


The South East Bus Festival

The South East Bus Festival has been working in partnership with the Heritage Transport Show for the past 9 years. The Festival will showcase a collection of buses and coaches both vintage and modern. Visitors will be able to walk through 90 years of bus and coach history, with the oldest bus displayed having been built in 1929 right through to the brand new state of the art coaches - by The Kings Ferry Group, of course! 

The Festival is filled with entertainment for all ages, from guest speakers and trade stands to free vintage bus rides around the showground, there really is something for everyone. The Show will also be hosting a Farmers Market with an incredible array of stands selling a range of delicious, locally produced food and drink.


We're Exhibiting

By now you have probably already guessed that we will be exhibiting at the Festival, it's one that we can't miss. We've been exhibiting at this incredible show for years and we love showcasing our modern fleet to all coach and bus enthusiasts! This year we're bigger and better, in 2018 we took 4 vehicles to the show , this year we're taking 10! 

We'll be taking our brand new 2019 Mercedes-Benz Tourismo VIP coach, a 2017 Irizar VIP coach, an executive Irizar coach with our iconic Kings Ferry livery, a 2006 Irizar coach with our Ouibus livery and a 2015 Caetano National Express livery coach. Clarkes of London will be bringing their 2018 Yutong with the Crawley Town FC livery and a 2018 Yutong with Clarkes' iconic livery. The most recent additions to the Group, Stewarts Coaches and Woods Coaches will also be making an appearance. Stewarts Coaches are bringing their 2015 Irizar with their classic Stewarts livery along with their brand new 2019 Mercedes-Benz Citaro bus and Woods Coaches are showcasing their 2017 Irizar single-deck coach. 

The South East Bus Festival will be a first for The Kings Ferry Group, it'll be the first family outing, with all four businesses coming together to showcase their fleet side by side. What a truly proud and unforgettable moment it will be. 


What's The Big Reveal?

While we can't tell you exactly what it is, otherwise that would ruin the surprise, we can give you a few hints. 

This surprise coincides with a recent event we held. It will provide a lot of opportunity to those who have an interest in coaches. We are one of the first coach operators in the South East to offer something like this.

Glastonbury Festival

Glastonbury Festival is the largest greenfield festival in the world. It attracts some of the biggest names in the music industry and is attended to by over 175,000 people. This five-day festival will be taking place from the 26th to 30th June 2019, at Worthy Farm in Somerset. Isle of Wight Festival

Isle of Wight Festival is the UK’s longest-running music festival and is one of the most popular in Europe. It’s held in Newport every year, this year taking place on the 13th to 16th June 2019. The Kings Ferry Group expands with more than 10 new appointments and launches fresh corporate identity

The Kings Ferry Group, which specialises in coach travel, chauffeur transfers and ground transport management, has expanded its team to accommodate its recent growth. From sales and accounts to senior positions, there have been more than 10 new appointments made across the Group. To complement the growth and strategic plans, the company has developed a new corporate identity and branding which was unveiled for the first time in public at The Business Travel Show back in February.

The Kings Ferry Group, which formed late 2018, consists of four well-established coach operators. The Kings Ferry is renowned in Kent for its luxury coach hire and London commuter services. It also offers corporate clients a full transport management solution, along with VIP coach services and a full wrapping service. The company acquired Clarkes of London back in December 2016, before recently acquiring Stewarts Coach Group in September 2018. The Stewarts Coach Group is made up of four brands, Stewarts Coaches, Stewarts Tours, Woods Coaches and Woods Tours, which have all been taken on by The Kings Ferry Group.

Over the past six months, the Group which is part of National Express, has been developing a new strategy to ensure the expansion delivers efficiencies, enables key competencies to be shared across the business and provides a sustainable platform for future growth. The Group is on track to achieve its £50 million annual revenue target one year ahead of schedule and now has charge of a fleet of 223 vehicles, a 200% increase from 2016.

Central to making the expansion a success is getting the right people in the right places, and we are delighted to announce that more than 10 new positions have been created within the Group and have been filled by experienced and competent people,” says Managing Director, Ian Fraser.

“Throughout this process we have been focused on creating a leadership structure that will sustain our recent growth, yet also provide room for more growth in the future. One outcome is the creation of several new director positions across the Group – some of which have been filled by existing managers, and others which are new appointments from outside of the business.”

The new Kings Ferry Group branding features a fresh visual treatment of the logo. “It’s really important that as the business gets bigger and more complex behind the scenes, our message to customers and stakeholders must become ever clearer. In its most simple form, what we do is connect people to the places they want to visit and however we do that, and wherever we do that, we will always strive to provide the best in service and value,” concludes Ian Fraser.

Mick Keohane started his journey in 1989 as an Auto-Electrician before being promoted to Workshop Foreman, Engineering Manager and Engineering Director. Mick has recently been promoted to Group Engineering Director, overseeing the engineer work across The Kings Ferry, Clarkes of London, Stewarts Coaches and Woods Coaches.

Jim Merchant started his work back in 1989 as a coach driver. With his vast experience and impeccable knowledge he has seen many sights across the UK and Europe. He has been a coach driver on the commuter service, VIP private hire and for corporate contracts such as the Orient Express. Nowadays, he spends his time driving a coach between two locations for our biggest corporate contract.

We spoke to Anthony Smith, Operations Manager, and Darren Cleaver, Assistant Operations Manager about what it’s been like having Jim around.

“Jim has always been reliable, he runs like clockwork - always on time and never untidy. He never causes us any trouble. He’s one of our go-to coach drivers”, says Darren.

Anthony states, “Jim has been in the business for a long time, he knows how the job should be done. He’s even taught me a thing or two when I first started. He likes to keep standards high. He will always turn up looking his best, shirt buttoned to the top, tie done perfectly. He’s always so proud to be part of The Kings Ferry.”

Horse Racing is one of the longest established sports in Great Britain, dating back many centuries. With the UK having some of the world’s most iconic racecourses, it’s no surprise that we’ve produced some of the greatest jockeys of all time.

There are two main forms of horse racing, flat racing (distances between 5 furlongs and 2 miles 5 furlongs without obstacles) and National Hunt racing (distances between 2 miles and 4.5 miles, jumping over hurdles or fences). National Hunt races are more commonly known as steeplechases.

With horse racing being an event for everyone, let’s look at the major horse racing events and when they are happening.

The Grand National

When: 4-6th April 2019

This three-day festival held at Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool, is one of the most famous and most anticipated horse races in the world. With around 150,000 people attending every year, in addition to over half a million people who watch it on TV worldwide, The Grand National is definitely a race to attend. Ladies Day takes place on the Friday, with the infamous The Randox Health Grand National Steeple Chase taking place on the Saturday at 5:15pm with a £1 million prize fund.

With last year’s winner Tiger Roll set to compete again for 2019, will he be the next Red Rum and win the Grand National back-to-back?

Royal Ascot

When: 18-22nd June 2019

Royal Ascot is the epitome of sophistication, elegance and unparalleled racing. From private boxes to picnics, this five-day event is a right royal affair. The event attracts many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for millions of pounds in prize money. Alongside the plethora of famous faces, the arrival of the Royal Procession is one of the event highlights, starting at 2pm sharp each day. Royal Ascot is an event like no other, with its spectacular heritage, high fashion, fine dining and pageantry making for an unforgettable experience.

The Investec Derby Festival

When: 31st May – 1st June 2019

The Investec Derby Festival is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey. This magnificent two-day event is a test of racehorse and wardrobe, not only does the festival feature the prestigious Style Awards but it is home to the Greatest Flat Race in the World. Opening the festival on the Friday is Ladies Day, a celebration for the fillies with some fantastic prizes up for grabs both on and off the track. From skydivers to celebrity DJs, this festival will kick-start your summer.

All-Weather Championships Finals Day 2019

When: 19th April 2019

The All-Weather Championships concludes with a spectacular finals race at Lingfield Park on Good Friday. With over £1 million on offer over six race categories, this event sees the biggest prize fund for an all-weather raceday ever in Europe, and is one of the richest days in the UK. There’s plenty of entertainment for the whole family, from free face painters and live music to inflatable derby hoppers and an Easter egg hunt.

Ebor Festival

When: 21-24th August 2019

The Ebor Festival is a spectacular four-day event taking place at York Racecourse in the height of summer. With the oldest, richest, fastest and most famous races, the Ebor Festival is one not to be missed. The event kicks off with day one featuring the Juddmonte International, the richest race of the season and ranked first of all thoroughbred horses in the world. Ladies Day takes place on day two of the event, with some fabulous prizes up for grabs and the highest rated mare and fillies race in Europe. Day three sees the Nunthorpe Sprint, the fastest race of the festival, which ranked the highest rated 1,000 metre sprint in the world. Closing the fantastic series of races is the Ebor race, the oldest race of the festival which has been raced since 1840.

Qatar Goodwood Festival

When: 30th July – 3rd August 2019

The Qatar Goodwood Festival, known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, is one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world and is set in the Sussex countryside. This five-day festival is the highlight of the flat-racing season, with each day packing in as much action and excitement as the next. The first day of the event, on a Tuesday, will see the spectacular opening ceremony. With the Qatar Sussex Stakes being one of the seasons highlights featuring a prize fund of £1 million taking place on day two. Day three sees Ladies Day, the perfect event for socialising and raising money for charity in the unique ladies celebrity race, The Magnolia Cup. Glorious Goodwood ends its incredible festival with one of the most popular races in the world, the Qatar Stewards Cup which sees the finest sprinters dash towards the finishing line.

Learn a language

Learning a language can be beneficial to your work life, as well as adding a new skill to your CV. Known as the business language of the future, Mandarin Chinese is a great language to learn, although maybe not the easiest. Any language learnt will put you in good stead for that next promotion or life-changing interview, whatever comes your way. One of the best apps you can download to learn a new language is Duolingo, it’s also completely free.


Commuting is the perfect time to lose yourself in a book. You’ll feel awakened before you get to the office, or it will help you escape the stresses of the day. With so many e-readers available nowadays, you’ll be spoilt for choice on what to read. Or perhaps you take a more traditional approach to reading where nothing beats a hard-backed book. Swap recommendations or trade books with your fellow commuters to open your mind to reads you wouldn’t usually consider, just be sure not to miss your stop.

Set daily goals

Get ahead of the day by setting yourself goals. Whether they are work or personal goals, they’ll help you finish the day with a sense of achievement. You could even use your commute to work towards bigger goals, perhaps weekly or yearly goals. Some have even started their own successful businesses using their commute time, such as the case for Seat Sixty-One and Web2Carz.


This may seem an obvious one, but talking to others is a great motivator. Everyone on your commute are doing the same thing, travelling to work, but how many have you actually spoken to? Speaking to others will help you on a daily basis to take influence from them, share your ideas, get their feedback, and get you out of your comfort zone. It’s far too easy to revert to our digital devices and scroll through countless posts on Facebook, on average we spend three years on social media. Imagine the relationships you could build in that time.


You’re sure to see many commuters on their travels immersing themselves in a Sudoku puzzle, crossword or word search. Not only does it pass the time but it also keeps your mind active – think of it as brain-training. You can choose to pick up a puzzle book from your local store or download one of the many apps on your phone. It’s a great way to stimulate your mind ready for the day ahead.

This year marked the 25th anniversary for the Business Travel Show, Europe’s largest specialised exhibition and conference. A show that brings travel professionals across Europe together to explore the latest technology releases, meet suppliers and learn from the industry’s top influencers. 

We’ve been exhibiting at The Business Travel Show consecutively for the past 6 years. This year was our best so far!  

Stand Design

Late 2018 saw the formation of The Kings Ferry Group, while the Group was formed, the corporate identity had only recently been made public. Our focus for the stand this year was to showcase the new brand, that’s why we went bigger and better!

Our trusted exhibition manufacturers, ESM Ltd, were on hand to design and build our stand. We wanted to concentrate on providing a ‘Complete Transport Management Solution’ for businesses, no matter the scale, all across the UK. We featured a few clients who we work with; BBC, British Airways, Blue Cube, UEFA, Metropolitan Police and See Tickets. As well as our stand entertainment, Matty Evans the magician and a Strike-A-Light game.

Strike-A-Light Game

Our Strike-A-Light game was one of the highlights of the stand, it was incredibly effective and successful. The aim was to test your reactions and see if you have what it takes to be a Coach Driver. The game could be played solo or head-to-head in a race to push as many lit-up buttons as possible in the allotted time. The highest score over the two days of The Business Travel Show won a fantastic prize. We had visitors come back multiple times to try and beat their score and reach the top of the leader board, one woman had 6 attempts over the two days!

One player led the way from Day 1, many tried to beat him but failed. Our Strike-A-Light champion was Eddy from Travel by Inspire. He scored a whopping 163 points, while second place scored 152.

No-one came close to his score, he was so quick!”, says Ashley Close, Business Development Manager.

The game itself represented National Express’ ‘Driving out Harm’ safety scheme, which is part of a nationwide program to provide safety training for drivers, engineers and staff on our sites.  

Matty Evans – Magician

Back again on our stand for 2019 was Matty Evans, a close-up magician who continued to wow visitors for another year running. Matty’s amazing sleight of hand, tricks and illusions kept our visitors entertained and mesmerised while the rest of the team were busy talking to prospective clients.

The days flew by as we were so busy, it was a really enjoyable and positive event. Business Travel Show is the biggest event in our calendar year on year, it’s always our most successful and valuable event.

The event was a huge success, thanks to the hard work and support of our marketing, business development and management teams for ensuring such a great show. On Saturday 23rd February, we held our first ever Driver Open Day at our Head Office in Gillingham, Kent. The event was open to both licensed and non-licensed PCV drivers; the day was a hit with close to 100 visitors walking through our gates, and over 60 expressing their interest in working with us!

On The Day…

As the fog lifted in the morning and the gates opened at 10am, there was an immediate influx of people. We saw many visitors who had come from different backgrounds, most of which were looking for a career change.

At one point, we had people queuing outside the building to sign up!”, says Anthony Smith, Operations Manager.

Visitors were able to tour the coaches, listen to real experiences from our drivers, discuss opportunities with the management team and learn about the training programme for non-licensed PCV drivers. There was also an ice-cream and waffle van to keep visitors refreshed, along with hot dogs to fuel their day. Delicious!

The day went fantastically, we had close to 100 visitors attend. We showed off some of the VIP fleet, including our new Mercedes Executive and the VIP Yutong coaches. The training team did an emergency evacuation display using the ‘50th Anniversary’ coach and we also did a short coach trip into Rochester and back for our visitors.

An area was set up where the trainees could all sign up to join which Debbie Mann, Lawrence O’Neill and Lok Gurung managed. They processed everyone that expressed an interest, (which there were quite a few) and managed to maintain a calm and professional demeanour all day, they were superb!

The rest of the team held meet and greet sessions, selling what we offer as a business and what we can do as a team. They were all great and answered all questions with enthusiasm and honesty.

Overall, the day went extremely well and the ice-cream van was a big hit. We have learnt from this event and are looking to stage another later in the year.” states Anthony Smith, Operations Manager.

The Kings Ferry Academy

One of the company’s newest ventures, The Kings Ferry Academy has had a great start, with over 50 people from the event interested in starting their career as a Kings Ferry Coach Driver. The in-house training team, headed by Simon Le-Mar, will be in full force over the next couple of months to get those interested trained up and out on the road.

PCV Training takes on average one month to complete and those successful will be given a two-year employment contract with The Kings Ferry.

What’s Next?

Over the next few weeks interviews will be held at our Gillingham office and those who are successful will be given the opportunity to join our growing company, either as a qualified driver or as a trainee.

It’s that time of year again when Europe’s largest specialised exhibition and conference brings together more than 9,000 travel professionals. This year the Business Travel Show will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary at Excel London on 20-21 February and we can’t wait to exhibit!

What’s New For 2019

In addition to Clarkes of London, The Kings Ferry has acquired two more coach hire companies, Stewarts Coaches of Reading and Woods Coaches of Leicester. With all four well-established coach hire companies working together, The Kings Ferry Group was formed. The Group will be showcasing itself for the first time at the Business Travel Show.

Newest Recruits & Promotions February 2019

We’d like to say congratulations!

After weeks of training, Kim and Sarah, our newest recruits have completed their PCV training at our Gillingham office. Both coach drivers have been on the road for over a month and have been providing a fantastic service to our customers. Our in-house trainer Simon has been thoroughly impressed with the progress our new recruits have made, saying: “They are both doing really well. The speed in which they have been able to adapt and rise to the challenge is great. We are all very proud of them and pleased they have joined our driver’s team”.

At The Kings Ferry we like to invest in our employees, in addition to rewarding them for exceptional work. One of our coach drivers, Steve, has recently undergone training to be a Driver Trainer. He’s now fully qualified and ready to help new recruits on the road to gaining their PCV Licence.

At the end of February we’ll be welcoming 5 more drivers to our PCV training programme; we can’t wait to get them on-board and continue to grow The Kings Ferry family!
